Oscar Points 2024: 96th Academy Awards Edition

The big day is finally here: Oscar Sunday! The year long awards derby will come to a merciful end by crowning winners for the 96th Academy Awards. With the industry declaring a best film, the Oscar Points race is all but sewn up. Now comes the fun part – which races will be decided by the Oscar. Here’s the races to watch:

● Lily Gladstone vs Emma Stone
● Paul Giamatti vs Cillian Murphy
● Visual Effects
● Makeup and Hairstyling
● Costumes
● Original Screenplay

The winners that have clinched already will be denoated by the star symbol (*). Oppenheimer clinched the overall race a month ago and currently sports a 259 point lead over second place. Over the summer, I will go back and retroactively add a few previous years to the Oscar Points system, but I suspect no film will come close to that margin of victory. And now, it’s setup to win many major awards on Oscar night.

Lastly, I want to talk about the system as a predictor. With this being the first Oscar night with the points system, it will be telling to see if the OP winners match up with the Academy’s winners. A number of categories won’t apply considering the Academy’s nomination system (see: documentary, international, and VFX). All those catgeories either have ineligible films at the top or one’s that simply missed a nomination. Either way, I suspect the system will be fairly accurate at predicting winners, as it’s supposed to actively reflect the season as a whole — not the taste of one group.

Anyways, this season has been tons of fun. It’s been long but worthwhile and thanks to everyone for the warm words and help on the point system. I will be returning in 2025 for round two. If you would like to reach out to me, find me on twitter.

In the meantime, read some of our literature:

Points’ Key

● Oscars: 10 points

BAFTA: 8 points

● Guilds: 6 points

– DGA, PGA, SAG, WGA

● Industry (Television): 5 points

– Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Indie Spirits

● Film Festival Circuit: 4 points

– Cannes, Venice, TIFF

● Major regional critics: 3 points

– LAFCA, NYFCC, Gotham

● Regional critics: 1 point

○ Best Picture Bonus Bonus: +1
○ Oscar Best Picture Bonus: +10

Each win for the major 20 categories (excluding songs), will count towards the running total, so winning at the Oscars A LOT is crucial to taking the top prize. The point system is a way for the entirety of the film community to have a say in which film truly deserves “Best Picture” at the end of Oscar night. It’s also to have more fun with the season as a whole. It’s important to remember these awards are purely for entertainment — not for yelling at pundits and anger.
